Santa Cruz used to be riddled with geeks. But then everyone moved to SF or the Valley someplace. Bah!
I think that if you turned over enough rocks, you'd find a thriving, yet loosely knit, geek culture in Santa Cruz. I'm particularly interested in what UCSC is turning out.
I'd like to work on setting up a Santa Cruz BarCamp or at least getting some kind of regular geek gathering going. Santa Cruz is an ideal place for such a thing. It's arguably more free than San Francisco. It's smaller, so it's easier to build a cohesive community. It's got a great university. And there's tons of talent. We could be the anti-SF :p
No hippies though.
